The lesser visited Hukitola island is situated on Jambu dweepa on the Mahanadi river mouth in Kendrapara district. It reminds us of the legacy of British rule and glorious maritime trade of our state. The building was named after the then Chief Engineer of Irrigation of Orissa, J Hookey Waker, as he had designed the construction of the building in 1867. Stones from the ruins of the Barabati fort of Cuttack were brought by the ships and boats to construct the 120 feet length and 60 feet in width building with six large rooms inside. Underground water reservoir in the basement of the Hukitola building was designed to store rainwater for staff & locals to quench their thirst.

The tranquil environment in and around Hukitola are strikingly similar to that of the Bhitarkanika wetland. A voyage to Hukitola island with its British structure is always a visual treat for the heritage lovers, tourists, nature seekers, wildlife lovers alike. We shall touch Falsepoint Lighthouse at Batighara village en-route if time permits.

Imp Notice: Those are planning to join the day tour from outside Bhubaneswar are requested to be on time beforehand to avoid getting missed out. Those travelling overnight via local bus/train are requested to reach before the scheduled time at pickup point. It’s always better to reach & stay overnight at Bhubaneswar before the tour starts. Remember, the tour won’t stop or be delayed in order to accommodate you in case you are late beyond the grace time of 15 min.

We shall move in a standard AC vehicle on sharing basis for the tour. However, if any participant wishes, he/she can opt for ‘Bring Your Own Vehicle‘ (BYOV) option at their own cost, but need to follow the pilot vehicle of Team Aitiha. Participants are required to use face mask, carry their sanitizer & maintain social distancing at public places.

Wear comfortable clothes as per winter climate preferably with sports shoes. Please carry your essentials with you which may include any medicine, umbrella/cap, binos, camera with lens, compass etc. Remember you are entering a reserve forest area, hence act responsibly.
