Princely Estate Tour: Khallikote
December 12, 2021
Etymologically, the term Khallikote means combination of number of forts or kotas. The history of the Royal family of this ex-princely state can be traced back to 13th century. It’s said that, two brothers Gendu Rana and Kirtan Rana, descendants of the Rajputs of the Ranas of Mewar, came to this place and started their rule. Its popular kings like Harihara Mardaraj, Rama Chandra Mardaraj were great patrons of culture. The credit of the first college for Art & Crafts in Odisha goes to Khallikote. which is now functioning in the Khallikote Palace itself. There is a Govt. Autonomous College at Berhampur known as “Khallikote College”, named after Khallikote, whose revenue has been utilized for the spread of education. Khallikote is the first attempt by Aitiha in curating the ‘Princely Estate Tour’ series touching various princely esttaes & its nearby heritage sites in Odisha.
